Frequently Asked Questions
What is Facilitated Communication Training?
Facilitated Communication Training is a strategy within the methods of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) whereby a person, often referred to as a ‘facilitator,’ provides a system of supports in order to enable more effective pointing to targets for communication. The system of supports includes physical touch as well as communicative and emotional support. The long term goal for use of the method is the highest degree of independence possible for that individual. More information on the method can be found here at the website for The Institute on Communication and Inclusion at Syracuse University.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO BECOMING A COACH OR TRAINER?
The first step is to gain experience and develop your skills as a facilitator. This means that you need to be actively involved in using the method with an individual. Ideally, you should get experience with multiple individuals. A description of the competencies for a coach and the Wellspring training program for coaches can be found here . What are The Best Practices in Facilitated Communication Training?
The Institute on Communication and Inclusion at Syracuse University has published a set of best practice guidelines. These guidelines were developed from the ICI Training Standards, a document that was put together in 1998 by a group of experienced facilitated communication trainers from around the United States and Australia. The purpose of this document was to:
- Develop consistently high-quality practices of facilitated communication across users and facilitators.
- Increase the focus on working towards independence.
- Give assurance to agencies that the method is being applied correctly.
