How is Facilitated Communication (FC)

a form of Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC)?

FC is one method of AAC that a person might use to communicate. FC is like other methods of AAC

in the following ways:

  • The use of FC is part of a total communication approach where it is used alongside other AAC strategies and expands the range of expression that a person has.

  • The goals of FC are the same as other methods of AAC - to increase a person’s ability to participate in all areas of community life, have meaningful social interactions with others and make choices and decisions about things in their life.

  • The principles of the Presumption of Competence and the Right to Communicate guide the work of communication partners/facilitators.

  • The role of communication partners is critical to the success of a person’s use of FC. Communication partners are often referred to as facilitators when supporting a person who uses FC.
